The accurate levelling and setting of the geometry of large machine tools has been dominated by two widely used tools - the precision electronic level and the interferometer beam laser.

 

An alternative system with key features patented by Hamar Laser Instruments of Danbury, USA has been proven by US machine builders and large precision machining facilities to offer a highly advantageous solution for machine levelling and geometrical machine alignment.

The Hamar L743 laser system provides an extraordinary level of alignment accuracy as well as speed and simplicity of use that no other machine alignment system is able to match.


While there are many important elements of the laser system, three key technologies are the cornerstones to the Hamar system's advantages.


The unmatched ability of Hamar's scanning laser beam to project a laser plane with accuracy better than 0.5 arcsec over 360 degrees creates a single datum for the setting of the entire machine tool base in one setup, avoiding the incremental errors inherent to any system requiring multiple setups.


The laser beam position is measured with 0.5 micron resolution radio targets that transmit a reading of the height to the beam from any point on the machine tool being aligned to a handheld operator display. This provides direct highly accurate alignment data that is not subject to integration of angles to determine the adjustment needed at any machine position. The live positional reading also allows an adjustment to be made to the desired set point without iteration of the measurement/adjustment process.


To control the complete machine tool geometry, the Hamar L743 provides three extremely accurately perpendicular laser planes. The setting of all machine axes to be accurately square over their full range of travel is made uniquely simple and accurate by this capability that is unmatched by any other laser system.
